Our Czech member Diakonie ČCE (Diaconia ECCB) decided to redirect its humanitarian aid to the Dawdia Refugee Camp in Northern Iraq. They decided to concentrate their efforts mainly on this camp not only due to the poor living conditions people are stuck in, but also for some characteristics that make it quite unique. Dawdia camp is open to different ethnic groups and religious beliefs, and people are granted the right of freedom of movement.
The camp is trying to be a perfect replica of the Iraqi and Syrian pre-conflict societies, in which Christians, Yazidis and Muslims used to live side by side. Something quite uncommon in these days in the area.
In fact, the majority of the camps are divided into sectors, depending on the ethnic background and believe of the refugees, and people are literally forced to stay in.
