Eurofound has recently published a new working paper on Quality of Life and Public Services, singling out our German member Diakonie Düsseldorf’s project to improve the quality of life of elderly people living in disadvantaged areas in Düsseldorf.
The working paper titled “Local area aspects of quality of life: An illustrated framework” offers a conceptual framework to explore the “local area dimensions of quality of life”. The new paper takes a comprehensive approach, providing a framework applicable to all types of areas in the EU, whether they are rural or urban, affluent or deprived. The paper aims to address policy makers, researchers, and other stakeholders, including those involved in developing measurement frameworks.
The work on urban inclusion carried out by our member Diakonie Düsseldorf is mentioned in the last part of the paper (Policy illustrations – Satisfying neighborhood needs of older people in deprived area). The “Quartiersprojekt Stadtmitte” project (City centre neighbourhood project) is positively showcased as an example of improving quality of life of elderly people. The participants have been involved in the first place with a survey to assess their quality of life and then empowered to actively participate in the municipalities’ urban development planning to ensure their wishes and concerns are taken into account. The project is also positively mentioned for its aim to promote elderly persons’ social relations through “neighborhood meetings”, “neighborhood cafes” and guided tours.
