The European Commission launched two new calls for proposals under the Horizon Europe programme. Horizon Europe is the ambitious EU research & innovation framework programme for 2021-2027 with a budget of €95.5 billion. With a particular focus on creating impact or the European Green Deal, the digital and sustainability transition and recovery from the coronavirus-crisis, Horizon Europe overarching goals are: to strengthen the EU’s scientific and technological bases and the European Research Area (ERA); to boost Europe’s innovation capacity, competitiveness and jobs; and to deliver on citizen’s priorities and sustain our socio-economic model and values.
The new calls for proposals are:
1. Boosting mental health in Europe in times of change (HORIZON-HLTH-2022-STAYHLTH-01-two-stage)
This topic aims at supporting activities that are enabling or contributing to one or several impacts of destination 1 “Staying healthy in a rapidly changing society”. To that end, proposals under this topic should aim for delivering results that are directed, tailored towards and contributing to all of the following expected outcomes:
- Health care professionals, national/regional public authorities and other relevant actors in key settings (e.g. schools, workplaces, etc.): Have access to and apply evidence-based, innovative, cost-effective/cost-neutral, large-scale, comprehensive strategies and interventions for the promotion of mental health and the prevention of mental ill health, targeting the most vulnerable populations; Adopt clinical guidelines, best practices, implementation strategies and policy recommendations (as applicable to them) to mitigate the mental health burden and help cope with the (combined) effects of a transforming Europe (e.g. the socio-economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, environmental degradation, energy transition, demographic and migration factors, digitalisation, and exponential technological advancements).
- The scientific community together with the public authorities anticipate new and emerging risks to mental health associated with a transforming Europe, contributing to better and inclusive public mental health preparedness.
- Citizens have access to and make use of new tools and services to take informed decisions about their wellbeing and mental health care needs (including for self-management and self-care).
- Citizens feel less stigmatised and marginalised due to their mental ill health.
This call for proposal has two stages process: the first part must be submitted by the 1st of February 2022, the second part by the 6th of September 2022. The total budget for the call for proposal is 60 000 000 euros.

2. INSPIRE (PUBLIC OUTREACH)-ERC Public Engagement with Research Award (ERC-2022-PERA)
This call for proposal is for activities putting the spotlight on a research topic, by disseminating its content, promoting discussion, and/or inspiring potential future researchers. Public outreach initiatives can consist of diverse activities, such as art and science projects, educational programmes, exhibitions, and can include diverse audiences and venues such as students, schools, museums or science festivals. In view of its activity of supporting new ways of working in the scientific world, with particular attention to the open science approach, the European Research Council (ERC) wishes to encourage outstanding science communicators among its Principal Investigators. The Public Engagement with Research Award is established to recognise those who successfully engage audiences outside their domain with ERC-funded research. Public engagement is defined for the purposes of this prize as the involvement of the public in the design, conduct or dissemination of activities funded by the ERC. Engagement is a two-way process, involving interaction and mutual understanding for mutual benefit.
One prize of a value of EUR 10 000 will be awarded under this topic. The deadline is on the 3rd of February 2022.
