An EU budget of €189,3 billion has been proposed by the European Commission for 2024. The 2024 budget will be the fourth budget under the multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2021-2027. The 2024 EU budget provides funding to the EU’s political priorities, most notably to boost the recovery of the coronavirus pandemic, to put Europe on the path towards a sustainable future and to protect and create jobs.
The 2024 EU budget will continue to support the six headline ambitions of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: a Europe fit for the digital age, a European Green Deal, promoting our European way of life, an economy that works for all, a new push for democracy and a stronger Europe in the world. Additionally, the EU’s post-pandemic recovery instrument NextGenerationEU will complement the budget with around €113 billion in payment for grants.
Next steps
After submitting the draft budget to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, they will have to make the final decision together. After giving their official position on the budget, a special conciliation committee is assembled, most commonly in late autumn, to reconcile the positions of the two institutions. An agreement must be reached within 21 days, which this year will occur between the 24th of October and the 13th of November. The discussions about the 2024 budget will run in parallel with the negotiations about the revision of the MFF.
