On November 22, the Bundestag will decide on the 2023 budget. Diakonie Germany, in a broad alliance of social organizations and trade unions, is calling on the federal government to initiate a paradigm shift and specifically to combat the consistently high level of child poverty in Germany for years to proceed. In addition to adequate basic child security, this also includes reliable financing of the facilities, services and offers of child and youth and family support, according to a joint declaration by the child poverty advice.
Maria Loheide, Head of Social Policy at Diakonie Germany, explains: “It is a scandal that children in a rich country like Germany represent the most significant risk of poverty. Anyone who has two or more children is quickly considered to be low-income. The current figures Study also confirms this by the Bertelsmann Foundation on large families. According to this, almost a third of all families with three or more children are classified as low-income. The situation is challenging for single-parent families with several children. More than 86 per cent of them are dependent on social transfers. In addition, massive price increases for energy and food are currently tearing the rug out from under the feet of many low-income families. Many children from low-income families are also left behind when it comes to digitization because there is no money for end devices. Child poverty is not a destiny but a solvable problem. It just needs the political will.”
