A public initiative in downtown Budapest was launched by our Hungarian member Ökumenikus (Hungarian Interchurch Aid) on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November.
Actors played the role of real families in the busiest areas of the Hungarian capital, some family members’ heads hidden by paper bags. Behind them a big billboard saying: ‘’Domestic violence and child abuse often remains hidden, if we don’t ask for help or we turn a blind eye to the signals that could turn into a tragedy.’’ People on the streets were asked to pose next to the actors to express their solidarity with the victims of domestic and gender-based violence, as well as to perform as actors themselves. All the pictures, taken with a board saying: ‘’Pay attention if there is something wrong!’’, have been immediately posted on the social media, allowing people to share them with friends and followers.
The press conference in Budapest was attended by Minister for Family and Youth affairs, Catherine Novak, who highlighted the importance of the joint initiatives between the Ministry and the Hungarian Interchurch Aid Organization to draw young people’s attention to the signals of violent relationships.
