Our member in Germany, Diakonie Düsseldorf is providing counselling and social support services for refugee children and families through a new initiative called “Starke Kids“ (Strong Kids).
The aim of the counselling service is to provide the opportunity to discuss personal issues, to develop a sense of trust and protection, and also to deal with practical matters relating to asylum procedures. This service is based on the recognition that when individuals have fled their homes in the face of war, violence, oppression or persecution, this is often accompanied by physical, emotional and psychological trauma.
.
Many of those arriving in Germany and seeking refuge and assistance are children, and so Diakonie Dusseldorf has developed a special project “Starke Kids“ (Strong Kids), the aim of which is to support refugee children who may have experienced trauma, and to give them the strength and hope for the future.
.
Diakonie Düsseldorf wishes to give strength and support to migrants and refugees not only through counselling, but also through medical and psychological care. The initiative also wants to focus on the options for refugees and asylum seekers with regard to return to their home country, and the uncertainties surrounding these decisions.
