On November 28, 2023, the European Commission announced the commencement of the 2024 call for proposals under Erasmus+, the European Union’s flagship programme supporting education, training, youth, and sport across Europe. With an increased budget of €4.3 billion for the upcoming year, Erasmus+ aims to bolster transnational experiences for students, educators, and young people.

In a bid to counter the impact of inflation on participants engaging in learning abroad, the programme will raise mobility grant levels. Continuing the trajectory set in the 2023 call, individual support grant amounts for learning abroad will see a 5.9% adjustment for most mobility actions in 2024. This follows a significant 12.27% increase made in the previous year.

A notable change in 2024 is the emphasis on sustainable travel. This initiative, positioned as the default option, encourages participants to opt for eco-friendly modes of transport. Participants from remote areas, islands, or places with inadequate rail networks will receive compensation for choosing sustainable travel options.

Erasmus+ will maintain its commitment to key priorities, focusing on inclusion, active citizenship, and democratic participation, as well as green and digital transitions. Cooperation activities under the programme will bring together individuals and organizations to address these priorities, ranging from local projects to transnational initiatives. Standing in solidarity with Ukraine, Erasmus+ will support projects that encourage learning mobility, empower those fleeing the country with new skills, combat disinformation, and facilitate the integration of refugees into new educational systems.

Next Steps

Following the adoption of the 2024 work programme, the Commission is preparing the mid-term evaluation of the ongoing 2021-2027 programme and the final evaluation of the predecessor programme (2014-2020). A public consultation, launched in all 24 EU languages, will continue until December 8th to gather the views of citizens and organizations on Erasmus+.
