Our partners from Iceland, Den Evangeliska Lutherska Kyrkan I Island (The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland) are working alongside Icelandic Church Aid (ICA) to fundraise for development projects in Uganda. The ‘Urban Youth Empowerment Project’ from ICA aims to support youth work and community participation in several slums in the Kampala area. The aim of the project is to build strong, stable, engaged and organized communities for young people living in slums. The overall objective is to impart skills and increase participation in community and leisure activities.
In light of these initiatives, the Evangelical Lutheran Church is organizing its own events to provide young people in Iceland with the opportunity to show solidarity, help others and make a difference through their fundraising and awareness-raising activities. On Sunday 5th March there will be a service at Bessastaðasókn Parish that will give children and adolescents the opportunity to actively engage in a liturgy. Young people from various Parishes involved in the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s work including Kjalarnessprófastsdæmi and Æskulýðsdagur will come together to support the projects in Uganda. It is the hope of our partners in Iceland that engaging the community in this project fosters a feeling of optimism and hope towards those among the most vulnerable in society, and ultimately helps provide a space where those living in the slums can feel safe and protected
After the Mass at Bessastaðakirkju on the 5th March, there will be the opportunity to purchase second hand books, coffee and cakes and other refreshments to raise funds for the project. In addition, the youth club will sell light meals from 17.00. There will be further activities planned on Monday 6th March including a fundraising bingo activity and refreshments.
This is a valuable opportunity for children and young people to learn about community support and solidarity, and for the Lutheran Church of Iceland to bring people in the community together for a common cause.
